At the behest of the boy, today we played Monopoly. We played the Avengers version, which adds some really interesting elements that made it the most interesting game of Monopoly I have played in a while. I lost, completely, but had some fun doing it. There were still tears (but not mine).
First play through of The Witcher: Path of Destiny.
Took a bit to get used to the mechanic and try and understand all the different elements, but ultimately had a good time. Will probably play that story again before moving on to the next one.
Been a few weeks since the last board game play. Today we pulled out Wingspan, and I managed to demolish the family thanks to a collection of birds giving me extra bonus cards. Personal best score of 99.
Huge game of Ark Nova with the family today. The boy won by a point after an epic final round where he played two animals that gave him the victory.
My wife got Wingspan for Xmas, and we just played through for the first time all together. It was so good. Such a beautiful game. Can’t wait to play again.
Played Back to the Future: Back in Time today with my daughter. And just as we were getting a rhythm, Marty disappeared from the photo and we lost.

Continue reading →For the past few times the kids have gone to Nanna’s, the wife and I have tried to beat Box 2 of the Monster Box of Monsters expansion to Hogwarts Battle.
Before yesterday, we had played that box 6 times, and lost every time.
But yesterday, we prevailed. It was glorious.
This game did not go well for us. Too many expensive cards up front we couldn’t afford, devastating our ability to recover dark arts attacks.
It was devastating.
Played a truly epic game of Outer Rim with the family yesterday. Took us all day, and involved intense Sabbac competitions, snarky battles between players and the elimination of Hera Syndulla by Jyn Erso for the win.
And yes, we played with the Skyrim game mat.
The kids have been at Nanna’s overnight, so we played The Lord of the Rings board game for the first time today.
Loved it. Made quite a few mistakes, and our tactics were all over the place. We got a few spots along Shelob’s Lair before Sauron reclaimed the One Ring…
Might try to play again tonight.
This was so much fun, even though the girls decided to gang up on me. Had victory snatched from my fingertips at the last moment.

Played against Lauren while the kids played video games. Ended up getting lots of spells that forced her to discard cards from her hand, so she couldn’t get enough tokens to gain new cards. Her defeat came quickly, in the end.

Cracked open The Hobbit: An Unexpected Party board game from the Christmas gift haul today with my daughter.
It is stunning.
The art is simply gorgeous. From the characters to the cards to the board itself, it is both The Hobbit you know and love, and something new as well.
The gameplay has just enough challenge to keep it interesting, but simple enough for the kids to enjoy.
Will definitely be pulling this game out regularly.

It’s still school holidays, and today my daughter has pulled out Disney Infinity.
I’ve watched her play through both the Inside Out game and the Star Wars Clone Wars missions.
She is having the time of her life.
I know the toys to life games were such a ridiculous money grab, but I still love the variety of Disney Infinity.
It was such a fantastic implementation of Disney’s many, many IPs. Not just from the characters themselves, but also the story-mission games they launched. Plus there were consolidated games, like the racer and the Marvel brawler game!
I’m still disappointed they cancelled it.
I can’t help but wonder what they could have introduced over the years since it was scrapped.
Combining all the Marvel characters to take on Thanos and the Infinity stones?
Rescuing Grogu as The Mandalorian?
Branching into all the Fox franchises? Imagine a Simpsons game! Even better, being able to play in the Toy Box with Homer and Luke Skywalker.
I guess I should still be thankful for the games we did get in the series.
But I can’t help but wonder what could have been…
