  • Familiar Tales

Spent the past couple of days playing Familiar Tales, which my daughter got for her last birthday.

It’s a pretty epic campaign based game. We only finished the first chapter, but had a lot of fun doing so. We thought we were doing well on the last mission of the chapter, but then things changed suddenly and we had to fight through hordes of enemies.

The biggest problem with the whole game is that it’s so big, and we don’t by have anywhere we can just leave it set up to keep going back to it.

But the aim is to play a chapter a week.

Looking forward to the next round already.

One of the characters in the game, Chalk. He’s a big golem with a big heart. Familiar Tales set up on the dining table mid-game.

  • For the past few times the kids have gone to Nanna’s, the wife and I have tried to beat Box 2 of the Monster Box of Monsters expansion to Hogwarts Battle.

Before yesterday, we had played that box 6 times, and lost every time.

But yesterday, we prevailed. It was glorious.

  • This game did not go well for us. Too many expensive cards up front we couldn’t afford, devastating our ability to recover dark arts attacks.

    It was devastating.

  • Played a truly epic game of Outer Rim with the family yesterday. Took us all day, and involved intense Sabbac competitions, snarky battles between players and the elimination of Hera Syndulla by Jyn Erso for the win.

And yes, we played with the Skyrim game mat.

  • The kids have been at Nanna’s overnight, so we played The Lord of the Rings board game for the first time today.

Loved it. Made quite a few mistakes, and our tactics were all over the place. We got a few spots along Shelob’s Lair before Sauron reclaimed the One Ring…

Might try to play again tonight.

  • Hogwarts Battle destroyed me this weekend

    I hate losing.

This weekend, my wife and I played the Hogwarts Battle board game, with the Monster Box of Monsters expansion.

It had been a while since we last played, but I’ve been tracking our board game plays over the past year so I set us up to work through the second box of the expansion.

We played, got close to victory, but then ultimately lost.

Oh well. We had some time without the kids, so we set it up again.

    Played it again.

    Lost again.

It was late Saturday night, but we were both unhappy. We set it up a third time.

    Played.

    Lost.

It was so frustrating. We would defeat all the villains down to the last one, but we couldn’t attack him until we had dealt with the encounters, which required us to roll three lightning symbols. And no matter how many times we rolled, we never rolled lightning.

Today we woke up and decided to try again.

    We did not win.

So we played yet again. This last attempt, we changed up the characters to try something new.

It started off really well. We smashed through villains and the first two encounters effortlessly.

But then, perhaps predictably, we lost again when we failed to roll more lightning.

It was devastating. 5 games. 5 losses. If I look back at all my stats for this game and expansion, we’ve now only won one out of 7!

We don’t have time to play tonight, but I’m already planning out our strategy for the next playthrough.

I hate losing. So I’m going to keep playing until I win.

  • Played against Lauren while the kids played video games. Ended up getting lots of spells that forced her to discard cards from her hand, so she couldn’t get enough tokens to gain new cards. Her defeat came quickly, in the end.

  • First play through of Goonies: Never Say Die today.

I played as Goondocks Master, Lauren, and Kara played as Goonies; Mikey and Data respectively.

Made a few mistakes, like I didn’t put out enough enemies in the early stages. But was still enough of a challenge for us all as we got used to the game.

A lot of fun, though! Looking forward to some different adventures.

To the Goondocks! Down here is our time. It’s our time, down here.

  • Cracked open The Hobbit: An Unexpected Party board game from the Christmas gift haul today with my daughter.

    It is stunning.

The art is simply gorgeous. From the characters to the cards to the board itself, it is both The Hobbit you know and love, and something new as well.

The gameplay has just enough challenge to keep it interesting, but simple enough for the kids to enjoy.

Will definitely be pulling this game out regularly.

  • This year I bought (and played) a lot of board games, but so far I’ve not found a good way to display them. I have a few on floating shelves, but the weight scares me. I need a dedicated shelving solution, but I’m not sure I have the space for it. Suggestions welcome.
