(Finally) Watched: The Suicide Squad over the weekend. Watched it on the 77-inch LG G5 OLED I’m reviewing at the moment, and we paused for a break right at the scene where King Shark is nomming on someone’s head. The film was twisted, but hilarious. 🎬

Saw Superman. It’s a great foundation. I wanted more Supes, though really enjoyed Mr Terrific and Guy Gardner. Lois Lane and Lex Luthor were solid. Unconvinced by parts of the story, though. Still… much better than Batman v Superman.

Finally caught up on Rings of Power season 2. While a few moments made me cringe at just how much they tried to imitate scenes from the films, I still thoroughly enjoyed the show. Wish I didn’t have to wait for season 3 though!

I’m three episodes in to season 2 of Rings of Power (we rewatched the first season to remember what happened) and loving it. I love how the sense of impending doom never really leaves.

Finished watching His Dark Materials tonight. It’s one of my favourite books, so I had high expectations.

I loved it.

Mary Malone’s story in the last episode just pulled me apart, and then the ending was emotionally exhausting…

Dafne Keen was incredible as Lyra. After what happened with The Golden Compass, I’m so glad this show got made.

I enjoyed this enough. I thought Ariel was great, as were Sebastian and Scuttle. But Eric, Flounder and Ursula were all a bit meh.

But I don’t feel like there was anything added here to the original. That said, wife and daughter absolutely loved it, so maybe I’m just a bit too harsh.

It took us years to watch this when it first came out. I think we were so jaded by the poor quality of the Disney movies before this one came out, so we never got around to it.

Another classic.

I was reading the other day that Ratatouille, Wall-E and Up were all made at Pixar during a period of time when the studio wasn’t working with Disney, and wasn’t yet owned by Disney either.

The end result were these three movies that took some creative risks you typically don’t see in Disney films.

I’m glad. This is a great film, and makes you ride the full spectrum of emotions.

Well, they’re setting the gang up for some pretty big storms given the amount of quiet in this episode. 3 episodes left.

My guess is that at the end of the season Omega will be abducted and the Batch will have to try and rescue her… in season 3.

I am loving the Bo Katan Kryze story at the moment. She saw the mythosaur and is having a crisis of faith.

So many connections to Clone Wars and Rebels here. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Two very different Star Wars episodes this week, but both were exceptional.

I loved watching Bo Katan be an absolute kick-ass Mandalorian. I’ve long been a fan of Katee Sackhoff, but this episode was exceptional, highlighting just how talented Bo Katan is, particularly when compared with Din.

But watching Bad Batch and seeing the redemption of Crosshair continue was just as good. I can’t wait for next week’s episodes.

I really enjoyed the return of Mando this week. Grogu was superb, and there are plenty of threads for the show to explore this season.

But Bad Batch this week was even better. Real horror movie vibes in an episode that picked up an old Clone Wars story that seemingly went nowhere. Can’t wait to see where the rest of the season goes from here!

I really enjoyed this. I thought Jonathan Majors was excellent as Kang, and am really keen to see what he brings in the rest of the MCU.

It did have the odd pacing issue, and Bill Murray was wasted here, but overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and much better than I expected.

This was a lot more fun than I expected. Loved the 4th wall breaking — not just the spoken scenes, but especially the looks to camera. I loved the patriarchy-smashing plot and thought Milly Bobby Brown was spectacular. Definitely worth a watch.

I enjoyed this more than the second movie. It’s still a bit too long – they could easily have cut the whole Calypso thing, given it went mostly nowhere. And I still don’t understand why both Barbosa and Jack were pirate lords when Barbosa was Jack’s first mate on the Black Pearl in the first movie?

Anyway, I’m definitely overthinking it. Fairly ridiculous, silly fun.

I was so bored in this movie. The plot was predictable, the protagonist was an irritating jerk, and the music was just terrible. Considering how good Phil Collins’ soundtrack for Tarzan was, I can’t help but think he completely phoned it in here.

I’ve been dreading this film from our “Disney” list for a while, and I’m glad it’s done, and I’ll never have to watch it again.

I really loved Tales of the Jedi, particularly the last two Ahsoka episodes.

Star Wars is a huge universe, but I really think Ahsoka, somehow, has become my favourite character. And I have a suspicion that I am not alone with that.

At the moment I’m in The Eastern Hotel at Bondi Junction, waiting for a 7pm screening of the new Transformers movie. I’m very excited. Excited enough to write a post on the Shuffle…

The room is currently filled with beautiful people who I assume are used to attending movie premieres. I, on the other hand, feel very out of place. At least when we sit in the cinema, it should be dark enough for me to blend in…

Who Will Watch Me Watching The Watchmen?

So I turned 29 last week, and one of the presents my lovely wife gave me to celebrate my slow and deliberate approach to retirement was a copy of the graphic novel Watchmen. You know: the one they’re making a movie of.

Now despite my slightly geeky disposition, I never really threw myself headfirst into comics. When I was a teenager I did start collecting X-Files comics, but that was more an obsession with the X-Files than with comics themselves. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve always been a fan of Superman, Batman, Spiderman and their superhero kindred, but more their on-screen and merchandising aspects than the comics from which they are based.

So it was with some surprise (to me, at least) that I initially found reading the graphic novel format a bit… well, a bit weird. For someone who reads as much as I do, the notion of actually taking time to take in each comic square - both pictures and text - took some getting used to. But the end result is one of fascination - not only did I absolutely love Watchmen, but it has become something of an obsession - I find myself constantly thinking of the characters, the imagery, the awesomeness that is Dr. Manhattan…

It’s also gotten me very excited about the movie. I’ve probably watched the trailer half a dozen times since finishing the book. And pretty much every scene in the trailer, I can picture the illustrated frame in the book. Considering how bad movies based on novels tend to turn out, I’m hoping that the opposite happens for this graphic novel.

I’m also hoping to read even more graphic novels, although I am a little bit lost for somewhere to start. Any suggestions for me, people of the Internet?

Damn! The Internets Are Slow at 64kbps

So slow! It seems I exceeded my peak-time download limit this month, and now I’m paying the price. I’ve been capped at 64kbps, and considering that I work from home and that I work pretty much exclusively online, this isn’t an enviable position I find myself in.

On the upside, I got a review copy of Iron Man on Blu-ray today, which should distract me from the online frustration for quite a few hours. And with my new TV, it’s going to look awesome!

Last week, we had our brand new, 50-inch Panasonic plasma delivered and installed. When I say installed, I mean “stuck up on the wall”.

Coupled with the new entertainment unit, the loungeroom is starting to come together. Now all we need is a surround sound system…

I wrote up a feature for Giz on the wall-mounting process that I’d thoroughly recommend reading and, if you are so inclined, Digging.

The end result of wall mounting is a gorgeous look, but getting it done by a professional is thoroughly recommended. We’ve watched a few movies (including The Frighteners on HD DVD and The Shawshank Redemption), and both looked absolutely spectacular. This weekend it’ll be Iron Man on Blu-ray…

There seems to be a real split in opinions over this ad. I like it – probably because it doesn’t actually try to sell me anything. It tries to entertain, and while it’s not hilariously funny, I actually had a smile through most of it.

I think the lack of any mention of Windows or Vista was a good move, incidentally. As soon as they say anything about Vista, the Internet minions will cry out against it just for that fact.

I’m looking forward to the next few ads, to see how they develop.

Taking a Leak With Glenn A Baker and Jack Thompson

I was fortunate enough to get a single pass to the premiere of the new Indiana Jones movie last week in Sydney. My thoughts on the film can be found over at Giz, but a quick summation is that its enjoyable, but they overstepped the “suspension of disbelief mark” a couple of times, which really detracted from the film.

When we went into the theatre, we had to hand in all mobile phones and cameras. By the time the movie was finished, I was so desperate to go to the toilet that I ran out past the table to collect my phone, straight past the throngs of people hanging around, presumably hoping for a chance to test out their Russian accents on Cate Blanchett, until I found sweet relief in the urinal’s embrace.

Once the fear of staining my good jeans had disappeared, I noticed that next to me were Jack Thompson and Glenn A Baker having a discussion about some thing or other while they drained the dragon.

And before anybody asks, no I did not introduce myself. I went to the basin, washed my hands and went back to collect my phone… There are just some places where you don’t talk to strangers, especially if they’re celebrities of any grade, and the urinal is right up the top of that list.

Finally saw Iron Man on Saturday afternoon. If you haven’t seen it already, get out to the movies as soon as you can to check it out – it’s fantastic. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark… I can’t wait for the sequel to launch in 2010…

Lauren and I also picked up Wii Fit on Saturday… It’s great, although it does involve exercise, which is something my body isn’t quite used to. Which is obvious to Nintendo, apparently, because I have a Wii Fit Age of 40. Lauren’s is 20. I know, it’s a farce. :)

Saw Jordy for the first time in months today – Andy, Sarah and Lyn all came over for a Mother’s day lunch. He’s such a litle cutey. Laclan’s gorgeous too, but he wears me out so quickly. Seriously, if scientists could find a way to bottle his energy, the world would be so much more active. And I probably wouldn’t have a Wii Fit age of 40.

This week’s going to be a busy one – I’ve taken on a few freelance jobs which will be very handy money -wise, but a lot of work in the meantime. I’m also starting my PR presentations this week. Hopefully all that will go well.
